Besides the new scientific work opportunities, the distinctive architecture of the new Philological library is an impressive trait. The new building has been designed by the architect Lord Norman Foster and resembles the shape of a brain. In advance it has been known "The Berlin Brain".

The public library of the University of Basel (UB) is an information center of the University and the whole region. The UB is part of the national and international information network.
Since April 2009, the dynamic guidance-system of the arTec allows to display the locations of volumes, premises and services at the UB Basel.

Today, the library contains over 400.000 volumes and offers its users 260 reading places (some of them with laptop connection). The EWI is a reference library with reduced borrowing abilitys.
In 2013, the EWI will be part of the new library for smaller fields of study and natural science.

With a count of over 1.5 million volumes, the Jakob-and-Wilhelm-Grimm-Center manages the largest connected public collection in Germany. The new center was built according to the designs of the famous Swiss architect Max Dudler.
